(NewsCore) - The first real-time moving hologram was set to become reality -- 33 years after 3D telepresence appeared in a scene in “Star Wars,” U.S. researchers said Thursday.
Princess Leia appeared in holographic form in a famous "Star Wars" scene, pleading “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” Now, scientists at the University of Arizona in Tucson claim they are close to producing the very same form of holographic video.
The new development means that a viewer who moves around the hologram will be able to see objects from different angles instead of from one perspective, as with 3D television.
“Holographic telepresence means we can record a three-dimensional image in one location and show it in another location, in real time, anywhere in the world,” said Nasser Peyghambarian, who led the project.
Until now, 3D technology was created from a picture of a static object. The new technology, using a new type of photosensitive material, allows the image to be updated every two seconds, providing nearly real-time video.
The technology would allow people to appear at far-off conferences, and specialist surgeons would be able to carry out complex operations remotely. Car designers and architects would be able to inspect their creations in three dimensions.
Peyghambarian said the system could even be used for videoconferencing. “Let’s say I want to give a presentation in New York. All I need is an array of cameras here in my Tucson office and a fast internet connection," he said. "In New York, there would be the 3D display using our laser system ... As the image signals are transmitted, the lasers inscribe them into the screen and render them into a three-dimensional projection of me speaking.”
